Nice article Emily. Han Solo has always been the coolest man in the galaxy for me (yes, even cooler that Zaphod Beeblebrox!) and I think a primary reason for this is the fact that, while clearly something of a rogue, it's always underpinned by a loyalty and love and a sense that he needs to protect those he cares about - and not just for Leia.
We see it in his relationship with Chewbacca from early on in the original film and we see it again with Luke both at the end of the A New Hope and, in particular, the start of Empire, putting his life on the line to find his friend in the snow of Hoth. And as for his story arc in The Force Awakens, well, it's utterly wonderful - both in the dynamic between him and his son, and that of Leia and the decades that have elapsed since we last saw them .
And I think you're right about the way the deep love he has for Leia comes to the fore in Jedi.
I'm not 100% sold on Solo: A Star Wars Story, although I did think it was generally good fun. But I completely agree that the one thing they got right on that film was in staying true to the underlying loyalty that Solo has in his friends and those he loves.
Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed reading.
