I can only imagine that people who think It’s a Wonderful Life is sentimental rubbish are people who’ve never seen it.

It’s a masterful film that, for much of its run time, is pitch dark. Which is why, as you rightly say, the pay off ending is such a delight. It’s a wonderful film.
